  278. If you redistribute this list, or excerpt a significant number of
  279. entries from it, be sure to also pass along the original anonymous-FTP
  280. location, and request that updates be sent to my e-mail address, as
  281. specified at the top of this file. This will allow users to obtain
  282. updated versions at a later time, and will help ensure that I get the
  283. information I need to do the updating.

  285. Also, keep in mind that accessing a whois server requires a direct
  286. connection to the Internet. In general, sites that have access to the
  287. Internet via tcp/whois will also have access to the Internet via
  288. tcp/ftp, and will thus be able to obtain this file directly. Making
  289. the file available via a mail-based server is therefore largely
  290. unnecessary.

  293. Updates
  294. -------
  295. I am interested in any corrections to the above listing, and in
  296. reports of other whois servers. Please send them via e-mail to the
  297. address listed at the top of this file. Unless the maintainer of the
  298. server has already announced his whois service publicly, I will
  299. attempt to contact the postmaster or system maintainer prior to
  300. including a new entry.

  303. Scope
  304. -----
  305. Whois servers, at least by my definition, provide directory
  306. information in response to TCP queries on port 43, in a manner roughly
  307. analogous to the DDN NIC whois service described in RFC 954. I realize
  308. that many sites instead provide this directory service via the finger
  309. protocol, or accept queries by mail for directory information.
  310. Although I'd be happy to receive reports of these, the scope of this
  311. particular listing is limited to the TCP whois service.
  312.  
  313. There are a few hosts that accept tcp/whois connections, but respond
  314. with information identical to that given by a standard finger server.
  315. Since I don't consider this a directory service, I have been omitting
  316. these hosts.
  317.  
  318.  
  319. Unlisted servers
  320. ----------------
  321. I know of some other whois servers that aren't listed above (at their
  322. maintainers' requests), even though they allow access to at least a
  323. small amount of directory information. Currently, this includes
  324. twenty-two in North America, six in Europe, and one in Asia. Typical
  325. reasons include: service is about to be shut down, service is still
  326. being developed and will be announced later, or another server
  327. provides the same data in a better supported manner.
  328.  
  329.  
  330. Server names
  331. ------------ 
  332. There are currently three popular naming conventions for whois
  333. servers. The most common practice is to put whois service on a host
  334. as far up as possible in the organization's domain hierarchy. For
  335. example, the highest-level domain name associated with M.I.T. is
  336. MIT.EDU, and M.I.T.'s whois service is operated on the host named
  337. mit.edu.
  338.  
  339. Another common practice is to choose 'whois' or 'wp' as the first part
  340. of the domain name ('wp' stands for "White Pages"). This would be the
  341. case if M.I.T.'s whois service were on a host named whois.mit.edu or
  342. wp.mit.edu. In these cases, the listed name is often an alias, not the
  343. host's canonical name. In selecting the name to be listed, I've given
  344. preference to aliases starting with whois or wp.
  345.  
  346. I personally prefer the first-mentioned convention, since it results
  347. in shorter command lines, and ones I believe are less confusing to
  348. beginning Internet users. In particular, the top-level host often
  349. supports organization-wide mail service, and thus the same host name
  350. can be used for whois queries and for e-mail.
  351.  
  352.  
  353. Usage
  354. -----
  355. The most common access approach involves separately querying each
  356. server of interest, via a direct tcp/whois connection. However, there
  357. are currently a number of active projects concerned with improved
  358. interfaces to these servers, either by more intelligent client
  359. software, or by standardization of the server behavior. Eventually,
  360. this should eliminate the need for end users to have the complete
  361. collection of server names; at this point, though, distributing the
  362. server list to individual Internet users is still worthwhile.

  364. The procedure for accessing the whois servers will vary depending on
  365. your host's operating system, and on what software is installed. On
  366. UNIX systems, the preferred method is
  367.  
  368.     whois -h _server_name_ _name_of_person_
  369.  
  370. If there is no whois program, sometimes it will work to type
  371.  
  372.     telnet _server_name_ 43
  373.  
  374. and then type the "name of person" on a separate line. (The usefulness
  375. of this will vary depending on the details of the telnet client
  376. implementation installed on your system.)
  377.  
  378. Alternatively, you may be able to compile a whois program yourself,
  379. starting from source code available at various anonymous FTP sites. As
  380. a start, you might try searching archie for files named 'whois.tar.Z'.
  381.  
  382. Programs named 'whois' and 'telnet' may also be available on VMS
  383. systems. Typing 'HELP WHOIS' or 'HELP TELNET' at the DCL prompt may be
  384. useful.
  385.  
  386. Whois programs may also be installed on other operating systems, or
  387. may be available for these systems via anonymous FTP. Searching archie
  388. for file names matching 'whois' (case insensitive) might be worthwhile.
  389.  
  390. Also, system administrators interested in starting new whois servers
  391. will probably be able to find one or more separate source-code
  392. packages on anonymous FTP sites. In addition to checking archie, you
  393. may wish to look in the file whois-servers.source, available at the
  394. anonymous-FTP location listed at the top of this file.

  396.  
  397. Other Formats of This List
  398. --------------------------
  399. Whenever this whois-servers.list file is updated, it is automatically
  400. converted to a few other formats. One that might be of common interest
  401. is a "Summary" version that contains just the server names and
  402. locations, one per line, and a few comment lines that each begin with
  403. ';'. This version can be obtained via
  404.

  411. It's intended mainly for people who have a program to copy the server

  419. -------------
  420. The data in this list are also available via the Internet Gopher
  421. system. Gopher clients should connect to the host sipb.mit.edu, port
  422. 70, and choose the selection "Internet whois servers". The
  423. whois-server entries accessible in the sipb.mit.edu Gopher server are
  424. automatically updated whenever this file is changed.

  427. root Gopher server at the University of Minnesota and selecting
  428. "Phone Books" then "WHOIS Searches".

  431. AFS Access
  432. ----------
  433. Sites using Transarc's AFS (Andrew File System) software can access
  434. the whois-servers.list file using the AFS global name space pathname

  442. Access Restrictions
  443. -------------------
  444. In general, these servers should only be used for isolated queries
  445. about specific individuals of interest. Typically, it is not
  446. acceptable to make an extended series of queries in an attempt to
  447. obtain large sections, or the entirety, of the directory. Such a
  448. strategy is objectionable both because of excessive consumption of
  449. server resources, and because the directory itself is usually
  450. considered proprietary. In particular, deriving lists of persons for
  451. distribution of commercial advertisements or solicitations is
  452. expressly prohibited by site policies in many cases, and could easily
  453. cause sites to curtail the current open access to their whois servers.

  456. Server problems
  457. ---------------
  458. Not all of the whois-server entries constitute a "supported" service
  459. within their respective domains.  Even at sites where the service is
  460. supported, there may be occasional changes in the server host name.
  461. Also, at any given time, you will probably find one or more of the
  462. servers not operational, or apparently unusable. I have not
  463. purposefully included any servers that I believe have been permanently
  464. shut down. In all cases, either I have personally seen the server
  465. provide useful information within the last few months, or else the
  466. maintainers of the server have asked me to include it anyway, while
  467. they work on resolving usage problems.

  469.  
  470. Collection
  471. ----------
  472. The list was collected primarily via an active resource-discovery
  473. approach involving polling selected Internet hosts for possible
  474. support of tcp/whois service. This was done with some attention to
  475. minimizing consumption of resources on other Internet hosts and
  476. networks. In particular, no DNS zone transfers were used to generate
  477. lists of polling candidates. Instead, a small number of host names in
  478. most second-level domains were selected, using various heuristics, and
  479. whois queries were attempted to each of these. All queries originated
  480. from hosts in the MIT.EDU domain. Also, I've been maintaining versions
  481. of this list since August 1990, and since then a number of persons
  482. have mailed me reports of new whois servers, or updates on the servers
  483. already listed here.
